| In The Help, Skeeter's love interest is named Stuart Whitworth. Stuart, being the son of a Mississippi senator, can't involve himself in issue like the civil rights movement. When Stuart finds out that Skeeter was the one who wrote the contrbook, it completely changes their relationship. Stuart breaks up with Skeeter because it's much easier than trying to learn more about why or how she did it. Even though Stuart knows that he could be a good husband and provide for Skeeter, he doesn't really have an understanding of what she really needs or wants. Skeeter wants to promote change in Jackson, but Stuart is too spineless and careless to help her. The song in this video is Don't Save Me by HAIM. It starts out with lyrics that suggest wanting the guy back. "Take me back, ta-ta-take me back to the way that I was before... Now I'm longing for the way I was," This is similar to Skeeter because the first time that she and Stuart "take a break", she's upset and wishes that he wanted to be with her. In the song, the singers ask "..if I had to beg for your love, would it ever be enough?" Skeeter is so wrapped up in loving Stuart that she doesn't realize that it's not fair for her to want him back so badly when he doesn't feel the same. She doesn't realize that his supposed love won't be the thing to help her with what she really cares about: her book and dreams to be a writer. "Cause I cant go on if your love isn't strong, ...Give me, give me all your love But if you can't hold on, Then baby, baby don't save me" These lines are saying that if a guy can't love you the way that you deserve, than he can't give you what you really need. Whether it's because his "love isn't strong" or because "he can't hold on"; it doesn't matter. What matters is that you don't need someone who doesn't understand you to be your "knight in shining armor". In The Help, when Stuart finds out about the book Skeeter wrote, he gets extermely upset with her. Skeeter realizes that because he doesn't care about her dreams and goals, he doesn't deserve to be with her. So she lets him go and decides to "save herself", which proves to be a good decision. Without Stuart, Skeeter is able to publish a popular novel and obtain a coveted job at a publishing company. This truly proves that women can be independent beings who don't need a man to "save them". |
